transcenDANCE Performing Group

The transcenDANCE Performing Group is an opportunity for a small group of youth, ages 15-19 years, to go through intensive and meaningful training in dance and choreography, writing, and theatre. They use these art forms as vehicles of self-expression about their life experiences and hope for social change. The youth create an annual dance theatre production that they will perform for other youth and community members throughout the season. These youth are selected through an annual audition process that happens every December. On average, the performance group rehearses 10 hours per week.

Youth activism complements their art. The youth investigate community through lectures, demonstrations, photography and museum exhibits, multi-media forms, and anything else that provokes questions, critical thinking, and personal to global connections. The youth involved take these themes and deepen their understanding of human struggle and strength. Their involvement encourages an investigation and knowingness of themselves, their values and ethics, and the strengths and challenges of living in inner-city neighborhoods.

transcenDANCE in training

This 2007 season we will offer more intensive training opportunities for the transcenDANCE in training teens. Up to 30 youth will be able to participate in a free weekly dance class with our teaching artist team. This is an opportunity for youth in the community who want an arts experience and/or to prepare for future involvement with the performance group. Our previous partnership with Hoover has developed into a formal relationship as transcenDANCE has become a component of the Hoover Arts Academy and Synergy Program. Both the Youth In-Training and YPG meet regularly at the Hoover auditorium, giving our program access to a wider pool of students and cultivating a culture of positive exchange between our Hoover, Gompers, and Crawford kids. We host guest dance artists teaching FREE weekly workshops which give youth an opportunity to develop their skills in styles ranging from modern and african to hip-hop and salsa. Eligible teens must be between the ages of 14 & 18 years, attend high school, and live in the mid-city or southeast San Diego areas. Contact us if you would like to be involved
