Cindy Sphabmixay was born on July 25, 1994, and is currently a junior at Hoover High School. She loves to dance, even if there is no music playing in the background. Ms. Sphabmixay wanted to join transcenDANCE because she had a strong desire to try something new, and wanted to find a positive way to express herself. She auditioned for transcenDANCE this year, and loves it. Ms. Sphabmixay is glad she joined and has gained more self–esteem through the program.
Dante Finch is seventeen years old and just graduated from Crawford High School. Mr. Finch was an active member of ASB, Class of 2011, on other leadership teams, and was a member of the Varsity Volleyball team. Dante spends most of his time dancing with transcenDANCE and has excelled with his modern, ballet, West African and hip hop dance performance skills to become a principal dancer of the group. Mr. Finch aspires to be a professional dancer but also takes an interest in Science and Biology.
Itza Perez was born in Mexicali Baja California. She arrived to the U.S. when she was 10 years old, with the aspiration of becoming someone important in life. Today, at 18 years old, and an incoming Senior at Hoover High School , she has the dream of becoming the very first person in her family to go to college. As she grew up she always watched any sort of movie that included dance. She remembers always pausing the movie to try to imitate the dance they were doing. She knew, even as a young child, that she had the love of dance in her. In her sophmore year, she saw a transcenDANCE dance performance at her school and fell in love. That performance inspired her to audition for the dance team. transcenDANCE has now become a huge part of her life and has helped transform her into the person she is today. Ms. Perez plans to travel around the world and help as many people as she can.
Jonathan Garcia is sixteen years old and attends Hoover High School. His greatest hobby is dance. Mr. Garcia loves to dance to all types of music. He is an active member of transceDANCE and trains five days a week with the group in modern, ballet, hip-hop and West African. Mr. Garcia has aspirations to become a professional dancer. a yoga teacher and study massage therapy.
Nerly Victor is originally from Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Her family immigrated to the United States in 1994. Ms. Victor attended Edison Elementary, Monroe Clark Middle School, Hoover High School and she is currently attending Grossmont College. She has been dancing long before she could walk. She started performing though when she joined the Drama Club at Hoover High School. Ms. Victor danced for two years with Elevate before she joined transcenDANCE. This is Ms. Victor’s fourth year with the program and she loves it. She is not certain if she will pursue a career in dance, but plans on making dance part of her life forever. She believes that dance has saved her life, freed her from all her insecurities, and helped her stay positive.
Olivia Pham was born on May 31, 1994 in Vietnam. Ms. Pham just completed her junior year at Hoover High School. She enjoys doing many things. Ms. Pham likes playing tennis, playing piano, ice-skating and dancing. Her dream is to become a veterinatian. She loves animals and wants to work with them and help them. Olivia was recently selected to travel to Denmark, as one of the Rotary Club Award recipients, to participate in a student exchange program during the summer of 2011.
Raul Lopez is eighteen ,and currently attends Garfield High School. He has been a part of transcenDANCE for three years. During the past three years he has also danced with local hip hop groups, L.L.D Entertainment and Da Vision. Mr. Lopez has also been a lead chorographer for local quincenars. Mr. Lopez loves being a part of transcenDANCE and loves making new friends. He loves Hip Hop dance and plans on doing it for a long time. Mr. Lopez would like to attend Grossmont College and become a social worker for teens.
Shakhnoza Nasrifddinova came to America, in 2006, at the age of twelve. She is a Western Uzbek Russian girl, with many dreams. When she moved to San Diego, she learned english in a year. She has two older brothers. Ms. Nasrifddinova is a very bright person, is positive, out-going, and a hard worker. She is very goal oriented and tries her best to reach all her goals. She attended the Russian Performing Arts Academy for two years, where she learned how to play the piano, dance and sing. In addition, to dancing, singing and playing the piano she plays tennis. She is ranked number two in single players. Ms. Nasrifddinova is also the president of the “Children Immunization Act.” She enjoys contributing her time to community service projects. Ms. Nasrifddinova wants to thank her parents for always supporting her.
John-Nicholas Dela Cruz was born in UC San Francisco on September 6, 1993. He has traveled all over Northern California before finally moving to San Diego in January of 2011, where he now lives with his brother. He is a 2011 Crawford High School graduate. He will be attending City College in the fall, and he wants to continue to improve his dancing skills. Being a part of the transcenDANCE family has changed his outlook for dance and life. for the better.
Angelina Aguilon was born in Mexico. She moved to San Diego, at the age of 12 with her mom and little brother. She just graduated from Hoover High School and will be attending Grossmont College, in the fall. Her goal is to get a Masters Degree in Pediatric Nursing with a minor in dance. “Ms. Agulon says “I love to dance because I like the feeling that when I am dancing I forget all my problems. I feel joy and I like to see how I get better after time passes. ” Angelina has been dancing since the 10th grade with the Hoover Dance Team. For Ms. Aguilon, transcenDANCE is not just a team..”.but a family, where we care for each other and cheer each other to be better dancers.”
Zach King, age 20, has been dancing for five years. He started teaching himself Hip Hop then moved to modern and then break dancing. He hopes to one day combine these styles and make his own unique type of dance. Currently, he is studying dance at City College and hopes to transfer to the East Coast or Northern California to continue to study dance. Eventually, he wants to dance professionally and tour all over the world. Zach stated he loves transcenDANCE because they not only have given him a family but also the tools to be a better dancer.
Winnie Lailah S. Kilonzo was born in Nairobi, Kenya. In 2005, at the age of fourteen, she came to America. She graduated from Hoover High School where she was on the basketball team. Now nineteen, she is currently attending Grossmont College, aspiring to transfer to a university in the fall. She wants to major in Social Work and Dance. Lailah has been a member of transcenDANCE since February 2009. Her interests include dancing, writing poetry, acting, singing and solving riddles. Throughout the short time that she has been with transcenDANCE she has grown as a performer and a poet. The transcenDANCE famly considers her not only a student but a sister, mentor and much more.
With every season that ends we sometimes have to say goodbye to some students as they move forward in life with their careers or continued education. We are extremely proud of all those that have graduated from our program and have become leaders in thier own community. We would like to celebrate their triumph now by acknowledging them below in our transcenDANCE Alumni Hall of Fame.
